At work the other day, I got to talking to a coworker about personal safety and what she uses to defend herself. She’s taking night classes at the local community college and sometimes the walk to the car through the parking lot can take a little longer than she likes. So she reaches into her purse and pulls out this little container. I asked her what it was and she told me a hot pink model of 10 percent mace. I said well that ought to do it. No one ought to be messing with her.
I have a buddy who manages at a local big box store. He invited me down for sort of a behind the scenes tour of his job. It was pretty cool to check out the automotive garage and all the high tech gear they use to work on cars and the warehouse portion where they unload the big semi trailer trucks that come in. The neatest area I got to see was the security section and what all they employ to keep the customers and merchandise safe. Of course as you may well guess they had cameras everywhere. They even had an exit sign hidden camera. It was a very impressive tour and I enjoyed spending time with my friend.
As I get older, I have been considering adding some sort of personal protection to carry with me when traveling late at night. There are just times when I am returning home from a show or an athletic event or even a meeting that I don’t feel to safe being out. Then , there’s always the temptation to stop at the grocery store on the way home to pick up something for tomorrow. I have decided to go with the 4ounce pepper shot stream. There was a time in my recent past when I used to have to travel by bus or bicycle to work at all hours of the night. With the downturn in the economy, don’t you think that a person should be a little more concerned about the security of their own home? Technology has brought us an explosion of video from cameras seemingly everywhere. I’ve even seen an alarm clock hidden camera at a homes security exposition. It’s pretty amazing what you can find once you start looking a researching what is out there. I have decided look around some more to see what all I might be able to use before I chose the appropriate system.
The news paper often talks quite a bit about crime numbers and trends. I read with a great deal of interest the story of one business man who after enduring enough burglaries and robberies decided to install a 16 channel wired dvr complete surveillance system. He said he could document the decrease in the number of incidents since the installation. He obviously believes in the deterrence capabilities of his new system. I’ve heard that they’re not all that difficult to install yourself. More and more people seem to be looking into this trend.
When out and about at night it is important to stay vigilant. Try not to wander around by yourself, particularly in areas you are unfamiliar with. If you do have to venture out alone, then have your cell phone at the ready; although, don’t text and make unnecessary phone calls that can distract you from your surroundings.
I also recommend keeping a pepper gel 4oz spray in your purse or pocket. Just a small squirt can have a big impact. Depending on the strength of the spray, a would-be attacker can be incapacitated long enough for you to get to safety and call the police.
